Is anyone interested in the Edward VIII/Wallis Simpson story? He abdicated the throne for her. I think it is a fascinating story. I read a book on the subject years ago which hinted that it was not all for romance. Recently I read something that implied that she got herself into a situation she really did not want to be in, i.e. married but not the queen. Any thoughts on this?

Interesting topic, Maryellen.

I read Wallis was very bitter about not being allowed to be consort if she were to marry Edward. I think I'd be bitter too though the BRF is steeped in history and tradition and welcoming someone to their fold with Wallis's background was not acceptable to them.

Most of what I know is about Wallis's and Edward's unsavory political friendships. Oh what a read that is!

Do you think Wallis regretted her marriage?

Hi Valerie,

From what I read recently on this subject, which is not much, she did regret it. I read she was an opportunist and I guess she hit a brick wall with the royal family and once married there was no higher ground to get to. It would be hard to leave a man who gave up the throne of England for you. I don't think she should've been allowed to be consort, but the royal family could've included them in family events; maybe not national events - I wonder what the populace thought of them. I love this topic.

Maryellen,

I agree about including them in at least family events.

And I can't blame the lady for social climbing. That's what we Americans do best!

I just purchased a great book via Ebay; it was a real find. It is titled "A Kings Story-The Memoirs of HRH the Duke of Windsor" published by Cassell and Company, London~1951. And it is dedicated to Wallis.
This book is amazing and a wonderful find! Thee are photos, poetry and all sorts of tidbits of info about the couple.
If anyone can get a copy(mayb Amazon?) it is worth it!!
